Hot Music - Soho (1990)

“Hot Music” by Soho is a phenomenal 1990 club classic produced by Pal Joey. It is quintessentially New York in the eclectic composition, encompassing elements of jazz, funk, and hip hop. At 112 beats per minute, it’s technically a slow house record, but it works in many sets regardless of genre. My introduction to “Hot Music” was in the late 90s when I was deeply immersed in New York’s b-boy break dancing scene. It was a staple for breakers, house dancers, and club goers.

I’ve played “Hot Music” at sporting events, nightlife venues, and private parties. The main samples include “Skain’s Domain” - Wynton Marsalis (1986), “Jump To It” - Aretha Franklin (1982), and “Move Your Body” - Marshall Jefferson (1986). EPMD and K-OS are among many artists who sampled it.

Upon hearing those jazzy chords today, I’m taken back to my youth where I learned a myriad of underground styles. “Hot Music” by Soho embodies the raw energy of New York, which I remain inspired by. It’s a musical gift that keeps on giving.
